UAE passport and Emirates ID renewals slashed in half by new smart system

Passport and Emirates ID renewals in the UAE are set to become faster and more streamlined as the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security rolls out a new unified smart service for citizens.

The initiative is part of the second phase of the Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme, launched in June by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

UAE simplifies document renewal process

The new system allows Emiratis to renew both documents together, even if the Emirates ID card still has more than six months remaining. It introduces a single interface for updating personal information and photographs, removing the need to upload documents multiple times.

According to the authority, processing times will be reduced by at least 50 per cent, while customer inquiries and calls are expected to fall by around 40 per cent. Officials say the simplified journey will significantly improve the user experience and reduce the administrative load on government service centres.

The authority said the upgrade supports ongoing efforts to improve responsiveness and deliver faster, more integrated services across government platforms. It also reflects the UAE’s wider commitment to digital transformation and the use of technology to reduce paperwork and enhance the quality of public services.

The Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme aims to cut unnecessary procedures and improve the impact of government services by streamlining processes and consolidating steps for users.

The authority said the new renewal system demonstrates how the UAE is adopting modern tools and best practices to simplify daily life for citizens.
